Voters enjoyed one last opportunity Monday night to see President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney debate each other face to face.
The debate centered on foreign policy, considered by many to be favorable ground for President Obama, but a section on international trade offered Romney a chance to once again criticize the president's handling of the economy.
Interrupting each other numerous times in perhaps the most vigorous of their three debates, the two major-party candidates discussed the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, whether and how to intervene militarily in Syria, sanctions against Iran and the rise of China, among other topics.
They attempted to draw sharp contrasts between their views of America's role in the world, with Obama casting blame on Republicans for a "decade of war" and calling for the country to focus on "nation-building at home" including investing in education to remain competitive in the global economy.
Romney more than once called America "the hope of the earth," slammed Obama's response to the recent attacks in Libya, and emphasized private sector investment as the key to strengthening the country's position globally.
"It's critical we make America once again the most attractive place in the world to start a business...and that's not going to happen by hiring teachers," Romney argued.
