With concern about gun violence on the rise, many Americans, including President Obama, have called for greater gun control.
But others, including, most notably, NRA Vice-President Wayne LaPierre in a press conference last week, say widespread gun ownership is the key to preserving public safety.
A New York newspaper waded into the mire of these divided views over the weekend by printing the names and addresses of people with gun permits in its area, information it acquired through public records requests.
In the torrent of comments that followed, many readers expressed anger with the Journal News.
