Sonoma County Transit will be donating space on its buses for a series of ads reminding drivers to “Park the Phone While You Drive.” The effort is the result of the Sonoma County Safe Streets Coalition, a task force formed in 2011 by Supervisor Shirlee Zane, according to a news release.

The outreach campaign has previously included radio and TV advertisements, bumper stickers and new crosswalk stenciling. The County transit buses will spread the message specifically to drivers throughout the region. The ads remind drivers to “Park the Phone While You Drive” and were designed to have a strong visual impact--featuring local children as well as Supervisor Zane walking or cycling near a distracted driver.

All aspects of the safety campaign are being sponsored by private and public donated goods and services. KZST and the California Highway Patrol donated radio air time; KRCB and Comcast donated television air time; the bumper stickers were underwritten by Republic Services and Sonoma County Transit has donated space on its buses for banner ads.

Sonoma Safe Streets Coalition members include local police departments, the Sheriff’s Office, the California Highway Patrol, Santa Rosa Street Smarts, Safe Routes to School and the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition.

People interested in the outreach campaign can contact Supervisor Zane’s office at 707-565-2241
