Sonoma Plaza parking limits may become longer.

Last night, the Sonoma City Council directed its staff to study the impacts, benefits, and downsides alike of upping the parking limits in the plaza from two hours to three.

Councilman David Cook brought the matter up for discussion during last night's meeting after receiving numerous requests from his constituents. But Cook stopped short of giving the green light on the issue without knowing the cost of replacing the signage around the plaza.

He said he did not want to vote for something that could end up costing the city a lot of money, and said he would vote for changing the parking limit if a decal could be used to transform the signs.

The other council members were agreeable to studying and discussing the issue further, and thus directed their staff to begin researching the parking limits.

One of the things that the council members wanted to know was how neighboring towns, with similar town size, are faring with three-hour parking limits in their downtown.

The matter is expected to come up at a future council meeting.
