April Fool's Day is not a holiday, but a tradition. If you think pranking someone is fun, as long as it's harmless, this is the day for you.
Even corporations get in the act. Here's a list of some of their better ideas.
Tech Companies' April Fool's Day pranks:
- Following its traditional April 1 pranks, Google (GOOG) announced the beta launch of "Google Nose" where "smelling is believing." (This one has been around at least since 1996, when Microsoft announced its new Smell Surround audio software for computer speakers. Weird thing is, it worked.)
- Google also launched "Treasure Maps" in its Maps website, which employs a used, yellow-ish hue and 17th century scrawl. Users can take part in the hunt for Scottish sailor William "Captain" Kidd's long lost treasure, according to CNN.com.
- Another Google video claims that YouTube has merely been a contest to find the best video on the internet. Various video memes like iJustine and other familiar video meme faces have been working in a giant warehouse for the last eight years combing through videos for a winner, according to PCMag. The winner will, according to this video, have his or her video shown when the site relaunches to show just that one video in 2023.
- Twttng jst gt shrtr. Twitter announced its site is now a paid service, and that only "premium" users will get to use vowels. Everyone else must use consonant-only tweeting on Twttr, CNN reported.
- Virgin Airline's Richard Branson wrote on his blog that Virgin will soon offer the world's first glass-bottomed plane.
So watch out, the jokes could be anywhere you turn!
